Pécs Public Library which is the legal predecessor of Baranya
County Library was formed in a historic building is style of the age of
Louis XIV in France on the lst of October in 1943 which is situated in
the downtown. This building provides place for the County Library even today.
The basis of the initial stock was three men's bequest namely: Mihály
Kelemen a doctor /who was the uncle of Mihály Babits the poet from his
mother part/, Flórián Mátyás a historian, and
Odó Szikray a civil seravant. Baranya County Library was formed in
1952 by the fusion of Pécs City Library and Pécs Regional Library
the latter exising only for some years was created to organize the libraries
in the county. After some partial extentions a new side-wing was built for
the public service.
The library provides the public library services at the highest level in
Pécs and it is the center of a network which is associated voluntarily
inculding more than hundred Baranya city and regional libraries and it is
the basis of the German nationality library as well.
The library has an important function in different professional areas such
as music and art, science of literature, ethnography. The institute was
qualified as a scientific research library for its rich stock, the level
of its services and the professional preparendness of the librarian staff.
INTERNATIONAL/PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS
Successful co-operatios have been made first of all with German language areas/
Austria, Germany, Switzerland/and the library has had connections with the
city library in Eszék/ in ex Jugoslavia/. A new connection started
with Devon County Library too which promises to be successful /the English
collegue visited the Baranya County Library and some og the regional libraries.
The visit was followed by the exchange of books, musical- and AV-documents.
The institute formed a book exchange service with the Library of Congress
in Washington. The library applied for the Deposit Library Program of
World Bank. The program offers valuable international documents /books,
periodicals/ of the business world for the local business men.
STOCK
The collection contains more than 300.000 dokuments. Its considerable part
is traditional material /260.000 volumens of books, 21.000 volumens of
periodicals, 9621 notes and several other printed material, pictures/.
The number of subscribed serial publications is 503, including 69 newspapers
and periodicals. The number of the records, CDs, casettes and microdocuments
is over 10.000 in the collection. The collection of multimedia /CD-ROM/
has been started recently. The stock was enriched by 6402 units in 1998.
SERVICES
Regional services
The local government supporting libraries in Baranya chose the county
library to be the professional and methodological center. This include:
- local arrangement of books, library extending
- professional counselling on the spot
- binding of books and periodicals
- employee consultation
- organization of trainings /primary level/
- staff training
- in-service training
- reader's camps/clubs for primary school children at a disadvantage /In summer
period/
- German camps/clubs for native primary school children /in summer period/
Lending service
The number of the registered readers is 9545. The number of visitors is 157.859. The number of volumes borrowed from the library is 286.87, a registered reader borows 30 volumes as an average.
Special service
People with disabilities
This service helps blind people anf those who have impared hearing. More than
460 soundtracks of literary work can be borrowed. Tape also can be borrowed for
permanent users.
Reading in the library
The library has 112 spaces for readers to read books, periodicals, microfilms,
to watch videofilm, to use a database of a computer, or learn languages. The
lovely reading-room on the ground floor is very popular.Its placement is very
0advantageous offering the great variety of choice of colourful magazines and
daily newspapers.

The information sevice presents the wíde variety of subjects and it is
available during the opening hours. People use this

- to acces to proffesional information highly qualified staff is at users
disposal on the spot or on the phone, the experts give answers to questions
in written form either in the areas of literature, sociology, local studies,
music and art.
The library is willing to do research work for the readers request in the
fields of literary studies.
Use of computers in Service
In order to get up-to-date, effective, quick information and provide them
to the users the library applies the means of computer techniques in the
fields of information of data, dataprocessing, registration, loan, reservation,
professional information. On-line contact can be realized between the libraries
and the databasis of the research places on and off the country. Databasis
ordered and constantly refreshed on flopy disk is a successful supplementary
to inform users of science of literature, sociology, law.
We have plans for creating a "business information office" in 1996. We hope
that the experience in Devon can be a sample for us in this matter.
Local study service
The Local Study Collection named "Baranya Library" is a treasury of documents
which are related to the county. Besides books Pécs-Baranya periodicals
and other provisional publications, annulas, pictures, forms, collection of
articles, casettes and video-casettes, catalogues, computer databases help
the staff and the researchers work.
Very soon a historic monograph is going to be done about the city of Pécs.
The heart of the researchwork will be the Baranya County Library. The Local
Study department will get a new task which is to construct a computer database
that is connected to the German nationality minority. Coming from this it
would be a research center further on.
Music service
It is exremely popular among users. There are 22 spacees in the lab including
14 channels. Users/readers can select many records including extra and
traditional music. There are CDs at disposal further more some videofilms and
valuable notes can be borrowed as well.
The Baranya County Library would like to meet the readers/users needs providing
the large variety of services. The change of regime in Hungary have taken place
in recent years unfortunately increased the financial difficulties of the
institutes. New strategy for working and development should be found. Baranya
County Library plans to create more efficient organization and better service
system, by the application of the latest results and methods in library
management and marketing.
The feature of the services were also shanged. This procedure was influanced
by the use of computers which are involved into the services. In order to
realize all above mentioned the mutual co-operation would provide help
between Devon and Baranya County Libraries.
